Alexandra Gruebler is a Berlin-based composer, producer and performer of electroacoustic music. She is especially interested in the alchemical properties and speculative spaces of autonomy in sonics, voicing and rhythm.

Primarily through the solo project baal & mortimer, her artistic practice employs a dialogic interaction between various processed instruments such as the psaltery, bagpipes, electronics, acoustic artefacts and poetics.

After The Periphery
44.20 ‘’ + score

After The Periphery deals with celestial mechanics, sonic abstraction and mourning. The composition is based on solo voice, complemented by harmonium, pipe organ, electronics, field recordings and text. It moves between counterpoint, modulation and stasis and engages with the so-called Roche limit - that minimal orbital distance at which a smaller celestial body can break apart due to the tidal forces of a larger body.
This threshold became a metaphor for processing the spatiality of grief, and a sonic space in which transitional, liminal states become audible and can be held.
After The Periphery draws on thoughts, texts and recordings from the past two years, a period shaped by experiences of loss. The Roche limit became an analogy for the materiality of grief, and the elusive dynamics of the mercy of time.
